Emperor Nero commuted suicide to avoid a death by flogging sentence imposed by the Roman Senate. (68 AD)

St. Columba, pioneer missionary to Scotland, died. (597 AD)

French navigator Jacques Cartier became the first European explorer to discover the St. Lawrence River in present-day Quebec, Canada. (1534)

England’s Parliament established a uniformity of religious services and the first Anglican Book of Common Prayer. (1549)

Colony of Georgia was created to house debtors and poor from England. (1732)

US Academy at West Point was founded. (1802)

William Carey died. He was the father of modern missions and translated the Bible into 25 languages. (1834)

500 Mormons left Iowa City, Iowa and headed west for Salt Lake City, Utah carrying all their possessions in two-wheeled handcarts. (1856)

First US dime novel was published. It was called “Malaseka, The Indian Wife of the White Hunter,” and was written by Ann Stevens. (1860)

US Civil War: Stonewall Jackson successfully concluded Shenandoah Valley Campaign. His tactics during the campaign are still studied by militaries around the world. (1862)

US President Grant met with Sioux chief Red Cloud. (1870)

Alice Huyler Ramsey, a 22-year-old housewife and mother from Hackensack, New Jersey, became the first woman to drive across the USA. She drove a Maxwell automobile 3,800 miles from Manhattan to San Francisco in 59 days with three non-driving female companions as passengers. (1909)

A passenger on SS Arawatta threw a bottle with a note inside overboard. It was found June 6, 1983 in Queensland. (1910)

Carry Nation, American temperance leader, died.  She became famous for wrecking saloons with an ax. She did much to spur the prohibition movement in the U.S. (1911)

WW1: US President Woodrow Wilson sent his second Lusitania note to Germany protesting sinking of the Lusitania and refuting German claim British blockade was illegal. (1915)

In China, Boxers destroyed the race course in Peking, the center and symbol of diplomatic social life and Western privilege. (1920)

Chicago Tribune reporter Jake Lingle was murdered during rush hour at the Illinois Central Train Station by the Leo Vincent Brothers. Allegedly it was over a $100,000 gambling debt owed to Al Capone. (1930)

The first rocket-powered aircraft design was patented by Robert Goddard. (1931)

First Donald Duck cartoon, Wise Little Hen, was released. (1934)

WW2: Norway surrendered to Germany. (1940)

WW2: Nazis killed all inhabitants of Lidice after it had been implicated in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The Nazi said it was to “teach the Czechs a final lesson of subservience and humility.” The village ceased to exist. (1942)

In Thailand, King Ananda Mahidol was found shot dead. Bhumibol Adulyadej ascended to the throne. (1946)

Joseph Welch asked US Senator Joseph McCarthy, “Have you no sense of decency, sir?” during Senate-Army hearings. (1954)

British lease on the New Territories in Hong Kong expired. On July 1, Hong Kong reverted back to Chinese control. (1997)

Edward Snowden publicly made his identity known as the leaker of NSA documents. (2013)
