Jonas Bronck of Holland became the first European settler in Bronx. (1638)

French and Indian War: Fort William Henry in New York surrendered to French and Indian troops. (1757)

Robert Gray’s Columbia Rediviva returned to Boston after a three year journey. It was the first American ship to circumnavigate the Globe. (1790)

Erie boat in Buffalo, New York caught fire killing 242. (1841)

Webster-Ashburton Treaty established US Canadian border. (1842)

US Barnburners anti-slavery party merged with Free Soil Party nominating Martin Van Buren for president. (1848)

Elevator was patented. (1859)

US Civil War: Battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia took place resulting in a Confederate victory. (1862)

Rudolf Diesel of Germany patented the diesel internal combustion engine. (1898)

Alva Fisher patented the electric washing machine. (1910)

Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Berlin Olympics. (1936)

WW2: US dropped the second atomic bomb, Fat Man, on Japan, destroying part of Nagasaki. (1945)

Richard Nixon resigned. He was the first US president to do so.  US Vice-President Gerald Ford was sworn in as the only US president not elected to office by a vote. He was appointed and confirmed as vice-president after Vice President Agnew resigned in disgrace. (1972)

Longest ever hunger strike ended. Indian human rights campaigner Irom Sharmila tasted honey after 16 years. (2016)
